Cannabis has a negative influence on erectile dysfunction
A recent review on the medical effects of cannabis was conducted by Rany Shamloul, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and it revealed that cannabis has a negative impact on sexual performance whether it is related to erectile dysfunction or impotence.
The first assumption and fact is related to the widely usage of cannabis as an illicit drug at a global level. Secondly, it is also important to mention the fact that cannabis is mainly used by young people unaware of the side-effects on long term, in this case related to sexual performance.
Besides of these facts, the study supposed animal and in vitro research and the conclusion that led to a controversy concerned the correlation between erectile dysfunction and cannabis. Until recently, it was only known that this drug affects some parts and receptors of the brain, but now it revealed that these receptors are also found in the penis body.
Dr Rany Shamloul thinks that this study will definitely change the current understanding of cannabis impact upon sexual health and maybe the awareness regarding this issue will be further increased. The full report of his findings is available in one of the numbers of Journal of Sexual Medicine.
A similar study was conducted by Buffalo University scientists on a sample of 20 men who consumed cannabis twice a day for a period of 5 years. The results clearly showed that that marijuana also affects the sperm quality which contains receptors stimulated by THC. Then, it also affects the man’s fertilization capacity by not being able to attach to the egg. It usually negatively influences erectile dysfunction condition in the case of heavy cannabis consumers.
On the other hand, there were previous studies that showed benefic effects on erectile dysfunction problems due to the usage of cannabis. The opinions are split but it is better to take these aspects into consideration when having to find the right treatment for erectile dysfunction. Solutions like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are the most flexible and effective solutions for ED treatment.
